CLARKE'S THREE LAWS

"When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong."

"The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible."

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Latest Scam: False Money Orders
The NY Times reported April 26, 2005, that many postal money orders, often from abroad, are fakes. One variant of the scam is that the victim is paid for more than the cost of the item and asked to return the difference in cash. Your friendly government Postal Inspectors have more to say on the matter.

I use PayPal myself when paying for items from sources I cannot confirm. PayPal is run by EBay and is a useful way to do business without giving out your credit card number to every Tom Dick and Suzie. They also have merchant accounts you can set up if you do a lot of on-line selling. They charge a small perchentage of each transaction to sellers.

Phishing
No bank will ever ask you for a credit card number or user name and password by e-mail. Period! This is a scam. Anyone can "grab a page" from the Internet and post it on another web site to trick you into revealing secure information about your banking. This scam is called "phishing." There are variations on this scam, such as accusing you of a crime and demanding a credit card number. No legitimate police agency, business or bank will ever do this. Never send secure information by e-mail.

Viruses, Worms, Spam, and Saddam’s Nephew

As most of my clients realize by this time, there has been a spate of viruses, worms and the like infecting computers all over the place. Spam is everywhere. Anyone running on a Windows platform is in danger of having his or her operating system hopelessly damaged. Here is what I do to keep viruses and worms at arm’s length.

  1. I never open attachments from strangers, and I only open them from friends if I’m expecting the attachment. Often, attachments are sent using a friend’s address.

  2. I have a good virus protection program. Norton is excellent, and McAfee also has a good reputation. And I update the virus definitions at least once a week (otherwise, a new virus might slip through). This is automatic unless you have a dial-up, in which case you must insure that you are on-line when the update is scheduled to happen.

  3. Once in awhile, I use Panda AntiVirus (http://www.pandasoftware.com), an on-line service that will check your PC without charge. Read their on-line instructions carefully after you click on the link before proceeding. This works only with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, which comes with Windows. If you use AOL, Earthlink or MSN, go on-line and minimize their browser – then open Internet Explorer. Panda spots things Norton misses (and the reverse is true as well), but it is always up to the minute in its definitions. It is an excellent double-check.

  4. For spam, I use a program called MailWasher (http://www.mailwasher.net). This allows me to blacklist senders, make friends list, and filter key words from subject lines (like Viagra, and certain words I wouldn’t use on this site). It even spots some viruses (but is no substitute for a good virus protector). After awhile, you’ll build up a list of blacklisted and filtered e-mails which will make your e-mailing a lot more user friendly. It takes some getting used to and you should read the instructions carefully. One piece of advice is that you shouldn't bother bouncing e-mail back since return addresses are phony and it will only come back to you. What I like most about it is that it downloads only the headers and return addresses so you can delete them from the server before they reach your computer – this is real time saver. Pressing their "Process Mail" button then automatically takes you to whatever default mail reader you use.

The program is free for one e-mail account. If you have more than one, you must purchase their paid version (but you get to try it out for 30 days).

  5. If you are one of my clients, I will help you set it up at no cost by telephone.

About Saddam’s nephew: For the sake of fitting the whole picture together, I imagine that Saddam’s nephew is a hacker, and doesn’t much like the West, and that it is he, and his friends, who are spewing all these Internet troubles on us. Of course, it might just be a “script kiddie” (non-programmers who use scripts available at underground hacker sites) from the hinterlands who, in lieu of chasing girls, anonymously destroy other people’s computers.

Regrettably, these are angry times, and many folks have an ax to grind. All you can do is protect yourself. Passing laws make us feel good and puts feathers in the bonnets of politicians. But the most effective measures are those we take for ourselves. You lock your doors knowing full well that 99 percent of the people who pass your house wouldn’t dream of stealing even if they were sure you weren’t home and had the door unlocked. But there is that one percent. Safeguard your computer as you would your children.

Japanese Error Messsages New

In Japan, they have replaced the impersonal and unhelpful Microsoft error messages with Haiku poetry messages. Haiku poetry has strict construction rules - each poem has only 17 syllables; 5 syllables in the first, 7 in the second, 5 in the third. They are used to communicate a timeless message, often achieving a wistful, yearning and powerful insight through extrembrevity. Here are 16 actual error messages from Japan. Below, the essence of Zen:

Your file was so big.
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.
-----------------------------------
The Web site you seek
Cannot be located, but
Countless more! exist.
-----------------------------------
Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.
-----------------------------------
Program aborting:
Close all that you have worked on.
You ask far too much.
-----------------------------------
Windows NT crash'd.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No-one hears your screams.

The Tao that is seen
Is not the true Tao-until
You bring fresh toner.
-----------------------------------
Stay the patient course.
Of little worth is your ire.
The network is down.
-----------------------------------
A crash reduces
Your expensive computer
To a simple stone.
-----------------------------------
Three things are certain:
Death, taxes and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.
-----------------------------------
You step in the stream,
But the water has moved on.
This page is not here.
-----------------------------------
Yesterday it work'd.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.
-----------------------------------
Having been erased,
The document you're seeking
Must now be retyped.
-----------------------------------
Serious error.
All shortcuts have disappeared.
Screen. Mind. Both are blank....
-----------------------------------
First snow, then silence.
This thousand-dollar screen dies
So beautifully.
-----------------------------------
With searching comes loss
And the presence of absence:
"My Novel" not found.
