A DRINK WITH ERASMUS

margin
(a student told his professor that he liked Erasmus more than
Luther. the professor said that Luther had ten times
the intellect of Erasmus. the student agreed but said that Luther
was too 'uptight.' the student felt he could have had a drink
with Erasmus.)

Let us discuss the nature of God.
Nay, Luther discusses God with men and some are burned.

Let us consider the potential of the goodness of man.
Let us consider his works, his arts.
Nay, let us consider the potency of this great brew.
You are a man of too many thoughts and not enough drink.

Drink up philosophers! We are too fragile for weighty issues.
An edict, yea the word of a jealous neighbor, will cinder your bones.
Drink up philosophers! Keep the books for the days and on the
shelves.
They would turn the green of the forests into the grey of the
universities.
Drink up philosophers! The woods will keep their green if scholars
call them orange.
That twinkle in my eye. It will give me away. Luther will know.
Drink up philosophers! Luther avoids this lowly tavern.
His pride saves your hide.
